Parent Tips

Students

Congratulations! If you and your student have selected the Academy of Irving ISD, you've selected the best! The mission of The Academy is "Providing A Relevant Experience For Life". The goal of The Academy is to educate the whole person, not just pure academia. Here are a few tips that will help you become an involved parent:

Ask Questions! Students will frequently tell you they don't have any homework, and most of the time they won't. We have 1 1/2 hour class periods and typically teachers won't assign homework. However, your student may not have finished their work in class and may need to spend time at home getting things completed. Ask them about it!

Pay Attention While They're Using School Computers. That's right, school computers! In Irving ISD and in particular, at The Academy, students are expected to complete most of their work on the computer. Additionally, most school books and homework assignments are found on the computer. Students LOVE their computers and think they personally own them. Not so! Students are to use the computers for school use only. If they are found Instant Messaging or updating their MySpace, be aware that they will most likely have their computer taken up at school. They will not be allowed to get it back until they have, once again, agreed to abide by our school's Acceptable Use Policy. This will make it very hard for them to pass their classes at The Academy and is a serious and frequently occurring issue. Don't let it happen to your student!

Praise Them Often. Your student is a rare breed. They have chosen to attend a school that requires them to dress up at least one day a week in business professional clothes, they will be held to a professional level of standard and will be graded on their professionalism, and will be going through one of the most rigorous academic programs in the Irving School District. You should be very proud and supportive of your student! They have chosen wisely and will be prepared for college or a job upon completion of their four years at The Academy.

Watch The Academy Web-Site for Important Dates. We post information about progress reports, report cards, meet the teacher nights and other important events at The Academy. Don't rely on your student to tell. They're going through a stage where they want to gain their independence. They most likely will not tell you what's happening in their lives. Stay in touch by keeping an eye on the Academy web-site and stay informed about events in their life. If you don't speak English, interpreters are available.
